FO: Snow White

  • Pattern: Snow White by Ysolda Teague, in the M size at slightly smaller gauge
  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Sheffield (Merino/Silk/Angora), 7 balls
  • Gauge: 18/4″ in 2×2 rib on US 7
  • Time to knit: 1 month (while distracted by World of Warcraft!)

Snowwhite

Deciding on a size to knit was my first challenge.  My  bust is 34″, which is at the upper end of the 2nd size (Small).  However, there is a lot of negative ease built into this pattern and I didn’t want it stretched to the point of transparency.  I swatched and liked the Sheffield on US 7 needles.  Even though my gauge was a bit smaller than required, I decided to go with it and knit the Medium.  The tubular cast on was a new skill.    The yarn, Sheffield, is very soft and squishy; I hope the tighter gauge will also help with durability.  The yarn feels luxurious and is a delight to both knit and wear.  Very occasionally, while knitting, small bits of angora will separate.  The fabric sheds, but not too much.

The pattern is easy and clear, but I found 2×2 ribbing in the round boring after a while and I had to push myself to finish this.  Not only was my stitch gauge off, but row gauge was too small as well.  This actually worked in my favor as I tried on the sweater in progress and realized as written, it would hit me at the biggest part of my rear.  Not the most flattering look; I have some junk in the trunk.  If you’re making this, try it on as you go and make length adjustments if necessary.  And keep in mind that the length on your body will much much shorter than the length on the needles, after the negative ease fabric is stretched horizontally around your body.

I wasn’t sure if this was going to fit or be flattering, but I’m very happy with it now.  A simple pattern + sumptous yarn = knitting success!

Thanks L! When I first tried it on, the neckline seemed a little bare but I think it’s ok for work as long as I’m wearing nice pants or a skirt.
