New WIP: Geodesic

Here’s my new project, Geodesic from the Spring 2010 issue of Knitscene.
Geodesic wip  I admit, I’ve been somewhat skeptical about laceweight sweaters knitted at loose gauge.  But I really liked Geodesic, and bought some Madtosh lace for it, but as that yarn is tightly spun and very thin, I feared it would be completely transparent at the sportweight gauge.  So, I picked up a few skeins of Miss Babs Yet, a wool/silk “heavy” laceweight.  The spin is looser and it has some halo, so the fabric at 6 spi looks quite nice.  The pattern calls for US 6 needles, but I had to go down to 4’s to get gauge.  At a row gauge of 10 and over 200 stitches on the needle, progress requires an awful lot of stitches, but it’s mainly stockinette and I don’t need to look at it much.
Geodesic wip2  Here’s a closeup of the detail; so far I’ve completed two (sets) of the center front tucks, and it’s a cool method, but I’ve noticed a little wonkiness that I hope blocking will resolve.  1.5″ more before I can split the front (s) from the back.

I’ve been thinking of knitting this one. The finished ones on ravelry look quite nice. I love the look of tuck stitches. I saw a ready-to-wear sweater (I forgot the brand) which had similar tuck stitches down the front but the tucks ended about 3/4″ from the edge so that a ruffle effect was created. I was think of trying that with this sweater but the gauge is probably not fine enough as compared to the ready-to-wear version.

I’m interested to see how you’ll like the finished sweater and fabric. I’ve knit laceweight shawls with size 8 needles and they have come out well, but I’m not sure how that works with a sweater.
