Amidst the gift knitting (which I won’t blog), and working on old WIPs, I have started something new, Hallett’s Ledge. Ok, this isn’t so new- it’s 2.5 weeks in progress. I found an absolutely lovely yarn at Webs, Tahki Tara Tweed in the “Fog” color. It was more cost effective than the Rowan Felted Tweed aran used in the pattern and it’s quite a nice yarn in it’s own right, very soft, gorgeous colors, lofty and lightweight for something that knits at 4.5 spi. Tara Tweed has good yardage with 122 yds/50g. This can probably be attributed to the nylon content (nylon doesn’t weight much)- the yarn is 80% wool/20% nylon. I’m not crazy about synthetics but 20% isn’t bad and the feel of the yarn is definitely wooly, and I love the cable definition.
My row gauge is a bit compressed so I’m knitting a few more rows to compensate. The sweater seems awfully small at the moment but I’m sure it will block out. Anyway, I added some short row bust shaping. I made a few mods with the waist shaping, I am kind of fanatical about symmetry and it looked wonky to my eye. The sides of my sweater are basically stockinette (one wide rib); that’s fine. The chart pattern is really fun, easily memorizable. The body knitting went really fast, but I stalled some on that sleeve. My row gauge grew more compressed, as it tends to do when I’m doing a knit/purl pattern on dpns, so I had knit a gazillion rounds, and then I had to make it a bit longer has 17″ doesn’t quite cut it for me- that’s more like bracelet length on my arms.
One little hiccup- I may be short of yarn. Sleeve #1 weighed 72 g, and I only have about 88g left, which leaves only 16 g for the bands and collar. Some of my shortage is due to my mods and smaller row gauge, but I also think the yarn requirements in the pattern are a bit conservative. I”m going to try to track down another ball in my dyelot (fingers crossed that Webs still has it in stock!) If you’re going to knit this pattern you may want some extra yardage just to be on the safe side.
