I finished about 20 knitting projects in 2010, but not all are photographed and I’m going to rehash my top 10. Why 10? Well, 10 is a nice round number and it was 2010, after all.
This was a year I bit the bullet and knit some Kim Hargreaves patterns; I’ve long admired her designs yet been a bit intimidated by the tiny gauge. These three are all knit with lightweight yarns (fingering weight for two, dk/sport for the other). These designs do take a bit longer to knit, but they are so comfortable, wearable, flattering!
1. Kelmscott, 2. Myrtle, 3. Lorelei
Lace was definitely a theme for me this year. What can I say, it’s pretty, feminine, and engaging to knit. Maybe a bit too engaging in the case of Kelmscott, which basically kicked my rear, but I prevailed in the end. Continuing with the lightweight yarn, Myrtle was my first sweater project with fingering weight! Lorelei helped me identify one of my new favorite yarns, Knitpicks Gloss DK.
1. Geodesic, 2. St. Patrick, 3. Aeolian, 4. Selbu Modern
A few of my favorite sweaters plus some special accessories! Geodesic was the pattern that convinced me to try the trend of knitting laceweight yarn at loose gauge. St. Patrick was a technical exercise in short row shaping and seaming; it was like putting together a puzzle and I love how it all came together so well. Aeolian was my first “serious” lace project using an actual laceweight yarn, first time knitting with a cashmere (blend) yarn; and while it gets only occasional wear, I admit that I do feel like an expert knitter when it’s draped around my neck or shoulders. Selbu modern is a really neat colorwork design, knit in fingering weight yarn and sized perfectly for my rather small head. Plus, it felt wonderful to finish a colorwork project that had been in UFO status since early 2009!
What about 2011? It seems most of my efforts were focused on knitting last year, and this year I’d like to knit, of course, but I also want to spend more time sewing and maybe cross stitching too.
