- Pattern: by Connie Chang Chinchio, Interweave Spring 2010
- Yarn: Elann Sonata (cotton), 635 yds, color #5116, Light Sage
- Needles/Size/Gauge: 34″ bust, 5.5 spi on US 6’s
- Time to knit: 1 week in April 2011
Well, I started this project on a whim, mainly from a desire to stashbust and it helped that the yarn was easy to find (yes, my stash is poorly organized). Despite that, I am very pleased with the FO!
The pattern has some errata (at least in the 34″ size), which I detailed here. Other than that, it’s an easy project and knits up quickly. I did short row bust shaping on the front piece; this tops fits with minimal negative ease. I wasn’t crazy about the asymmetric ringlet pattern, so I switched things up, and centered a pattern of 4-2-2-4 stitch wide ringlet columns rather than 2-4-2-6 as directed. This project has a ton of crochet finishing- all around the neckline (and back keyhole), the armhole edges, and the bottom hem. I dragged my feet, but once I got started, it wasn’t bad, and I admit that it provides a nice finishing touch. The keyhole back is tacked together with a few stitches at the top, as it tended to flop open otherwise- perhaps a bigger button would have been better, but I found this white pearl shank button in the stash.
I’ve used Sonata before, it’s a nice enough basic IMO. The cabled construction wears like iron, and the mercerization provides a subtle sheen. This particular batch was from a “mill ends” sale, so there were some issues to contend with, like knots. I’m not exactly complaining, as the project cost was under $10. Plus, the yarn had been stashed for about 2 years, so it was nice to use it.
My favorite details of this top are the back keyhole neckline, and curved shoulder shaping. The style has a lovely vintage vibe; it will be cool and practical for summer, and it provides enough coverage for a business casual work environment.
