- Pattern by Rosemary Hill, Knitscene Fall 2011
- Yarn: Wild Hare Platinum Sock (wool/nylon), ~300 yds
- Needles/Size/Gauge: 4.5 spi on US 5’s, size as written
- Time to knit: 5 days in September 2011

This quick project was an attempt to negate the “damage” from the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival on September 24th. It was a fun knit, and while my shawlette came out a bit small, it’s practical as a scarf.

The pattern is well written and simple. Only the first few rows were a bit tricky, to establish the increases. I did my increases through the back loop to minimize the openness, and symmetrically across the center “axis”. The lace is easy and fun, and the stretchy lace bind off, while a bit slow, creates a wonderfully stretchy edge. K2, sl 2 sts back on left needle, k2tog through back loops (tbl), *k1, sl 2 sts back on left needle, k2tog tbl; rep from * to end. Fasten off last st. I will definitely use that technique for lace in the future.

At the Shenandoah Fiber Festival, I searched for fingering weight yarn in a warm fall color, and I found it at Wild Hare’s booth. I’d never seen her work before and she has many lovely semisolids. The yarn has a nice firm twist and would be ideal for socks, I imagine. I love the brownish red color, named “Braveheart”; it reminds me of red maple leaves in autumn. Perhaps Platinum sock is a bit thinner than the Madelinetosh used in the original pattern; I managed to block it to size as specified, but it shrunk up a bit with use. I did a quick “mini” reblock (ironing with steam) for these photos.

The last photo above is how I typically wear this, wrapped around my neck as a scarf. It’s lightweight yet warm with a delightful ruffly edge. Check out my next post for a writeup of the sweater I’m wearing!
