Presenting my portrait of Ginny (and Fleur), first in a planned set of Harry Potter characters!

The pattern was fine, easy to stitch, lots of black. I decided to convert her scarf to Gryffindor colors and that gave me a bit of a challenge, since parts of the scarf in the pattern seem to be transparent. I went for solid tones throughout, with gold and red tones of various depth (the conversion info will be at the bottom of this post) It was necessary to convert the beads, since I had changed the scarf. The pattern calls for regular seed beads (size 11) so I picked some appropriate colors from my collection. Then I found the size 11 beads looked huge and ungainly on the fabric. Fleur called for all petite beads, why not the same for Ginny? I wound up using several colors of petite beads, conversion info below.

The fabric is a beautiful slightly variegated grey, which I chose for color. I do not particularly enjoy stitching on 32 count lugana (too tightly woven, especially after the shrinkage post hand dye, IMO) so I’ll definitely stick with 32 count belfast linen in the future. However, I think this fabric makes a gorgeous background for the sisters in law.

Arnold, Ginny’s pygmy puff pet, was substituted for, and I designed it from, the apple in the original pattern. I omitted the swirls around the apple/Arnold because I thought it would be overkill. He’s clearly a magical creature and the bright pink tones definitely stand out. Of course, I had to change the hair to Ginny’s russet color.

Fleur was basically a happy accident (when I stitched Gigi as an icy blonde, with her haughty pose and blue gown, she reminded me of Fleur Delacour and Beauxbatons). I thought Ginny would be the optimal character to pair with her, since they are sisters-in-law, if not the best of friends. I think this piece tells a little story, Ginny’s pride in Hogwarts, and love for her pet, juxtaposed against Fleur’s arogance and aloofness. Fleur has a soft side, and she’s a good person, but she does not immediatley endear herself to her in-laws. I think the dynamic is clear with Fleur’s showy gesture of surpise and Ginny’s petulant hand on her hip. I look forward to converting some of the other bewitching pixies into characters from the Potter-verse.
