New WIP: Silk Cocoon

Here’s my latest project, the Silk Cocoon cardigan by Connie Chang Chinchio from an old issue of Interweave.  Silk cocoon wip1The project not exactly new- I started it exactly one month ago.  It really should have been finished by now, but I set it aside after losing some steam with the finishing.  Nevertheless, I’ve picked it up again and am determined to finish in a timely fashion.

I’ve never knitted a wrap before, and I’ve only had a few in my wardrobe, so I hope it turns out well.  In any case, the yarn is lovely.  I’m using Mirasol Nuna, a wool/silk/bamboo blend.  The wool is in the minority compared to the silk and bamboo, so hopefully this will be appropriate for warmer weather.  The fabric has a lovely sheen and drape, and the color is a subtle blue-gray; almost qualifies as a neutral.  Since this garment
Silk cocoon wip2  will always be layered, that’s a good thing.  I got gauge (25.5 st/34 rows/4″) on US 4’s, though I liked the Nuna just fine on 5’s as well, where I got a gauge of 24 st/4″.  I considered knitting at the larger gauge to tweak the sizing a bit, but ultimately decided to knit on the 4’s.  Given the fiber composition, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t have a tendency to grow, and I like the wrap better when it’s more closely fitted.

Since Silk Cocoon is too big to carry around, as my “on-the-go” project, I’ve picked up my “textured tie front cardi”, which I began last summer and blogged here.  The body is nearly finished and then it’s onto the collar, cap sleeves, and ties.  Hopefully I can finish this up soon and include it in the SKC cardigan KAL.

I’m mulling over starting a new project though… not sure if I want to knit another cardi (possibilities would be Timpani, Mehndi, Swan Lake, Iris from Rowan 45, Geodesic, Sprossling) or a short sleeved pullover (possibilities include pintuck tee, lace saddle tee, Buttercup, Tanis, and a few others).

I feel your pain — trying desperately to finish a long overdue winter cardigan. Looking forward to seeing your FO post soon!

It looks great so far! I wondered about that pattern too as I haven’t knit a wrap sweater before (except for one I made a really long time ago that was a trainwreck of 5″ of positive ease!)
